GFNC National Nutrition Quiz

Mc Donald College is the winner of this year’s National Schools Nutrition Quiz. The team of 3 dethroned long standing winner Bishop’s College at the final on Tuesday April 24th. After five rounds of competition, Mc. Donald College claimed the title with 95 points, 5 points ahead Bishop’s college who finished on 90. Third spot was left to Westerhall Secondary School with 60 points.

Mc Donald College brought home a challenge trophy and tablets with cases for each team member, Bishop’s College received Bluetooth speakers for each team member and Westerhall Secondary received a dinner for 5 for members of the participating team. All participating students received certificates of participation presented by Minister for Agriculture, Hon. Yolande Bain-Horsford and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Mr. Finley Jeffery. Teachers of the top two schools were awarded gift sets by Colombian Emeralds and teacher of the 3rd place school received a gift bag from Huggins. A special award was also given to teacher of J.W. Fletcher’s team in recognition of the school’s determination and improved performance at the zonal.

The quiz consisted of True/False, open-ended and multiple choice questions in categories of Nutrients and food sources, Nutrition and lifestyle, Food composition, Chronic Non-communicable diseases, Food preparation and sanitation among others. The competition is organized by the Grenada Food and Nutrition Council as part of its mandate to build a healthier population through education. It has been held locally with sole responsibility by GFNC since 2009. Before 2009, the School’s Nutrition Quiz was a regional one, organized by the Caribbean Food & Nutrition Institute (CFNI).
